EF 08 FERRARI 250 GT BERLINETTA PL TDF 57 ( telaio/chassis 0677)

( I ) I primi di aprile del 1957 si svolse la diciassettesima edizione del Giro di Sicilia, mitica corsa su strada di più di mille chilometri, che al pari della Mille Miglia o della Targa Florio rappresentava all’epoca il palcoscenico ideale per gli appassionati per gustare da vicino macchine e piloti dei loro sogni. Purtroppo fu l’ultima vera edizione, dopo che, poco più di un mese dal suo svolgimento, la morte di Alfonso De Portago, del navigatore Nelson e di molti spettatori che assistevano al passaggio della corsa bresciana pose fine alle competizioni automobilistiche su strada. In quell’anno non vi furono Ferrari o Maserati ufficiali iscritte alla gara; tuttavia uno stuolo di privati rese ugualmente interessante il parco partenti. La gara fu vinta da Olivier Gendebien, nobile gentleman driver belga, al volante di una Berlinetta Passo Lungo con carrozzeria in versione 1957 di primo tipo, caratterizzata dalla presenza di 14 alette di aerazione poste sul montante posteriore del tetto, e contraddistinta dal numero di telaio 0677. Nella seconda metà dell’anno, dopo neppure una decina di vetture costruite, la linea venne modificata e comparvero solamente più tre sfoghi d’aria sul tetto: per molti la prima versione resta però la più affascinante da un punto di vista stilistico. La berlinetta di Gendebien era alla sua prima uscita e si rivelò vincente: evidentemente era un esemplare ben riuscito o ben guidato o ben motorizzato, tanto che in seguito arrivò terzo assoluto nell’ultima Mille Miglia, si aggiudicò la 12 ore di Reims, il Tour de France e la Coppa del Salone a Montlhery sempre nel 1957 ed ancora la 3 ore di Pau, di nuovo la 12 ore di Reims e la sua classe alla Ollon-Villars nell’anno successivo. Più volte restaurata ed intrattenuta dai suoi proprietari nel corso degli anni successivi, mantiene tuttora la livrea d’origine, rossa, con una banda gialla longitudinale, segno inconfutabile dell’appartenenza all’Ecurie Francorchamps.

(GB) The 17th Giro di Sicilia was held at the beginning of April 1957. The legendary route covered more than 1,000 kilometres of road, and like the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio it represented at the time the ideal stage for fans to see the cars and drivers of their dreams up close. Sadly it was the last real edition; a little more than a month after it was held, the deaths of Alfonso De Portago, his navigator Edmund Nelson and several spectators during a race near Brescia put an end to motor racing on the roads.That year Ferrari and Maserati were not officially registered in the race. However a crowd of private competitors made the starting field just as interesting. The race was won by Olivier Gendebien, a noble gentleman-driver from Belgium, at the wheel of a Berlinetta Passo Lungo with a 1957 version body of the first type, distinguished by the 14 louvers on the rear roof struts, and identified as chassis number 0677. In the second half of the year, after fewer than 10 cars had been built, the line was modified and only three air vents appeared on the roof. However many still held the first version to be the most fascinating from a stylistic point of view. Gendebien’s berlinetta was at its first outing and it proved to be a winner: clearly it was a model which was either particularly well produced, particularly well driven or had a particularly good engine, so much so that it later came in overall third in the last Mille Miglia, won the Reims 12 Hours, the Tour de France and the Coupe du Salon at Montlhéry, all in 1957, as well as the Pau 3 Hours, the Reims 12 Hours again with a class victory at Ollon-Villars the next year. Though often restored and well maintained by its owners over the years, it has kept its original red livery with a longitudinal yellow band, the unmistakable sign of Ecurie Francorchamps membership.
