| ooooBy the end of October 1962, Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez returned to Europe to defend their title in the Paris 1,000 Kilometers race, the most prestigious GT event in the world, which they had won in 1961 driving a Ferrari 250 GT entered by Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team. This time, Luigi had brought a 250 GTO (chassis 3987 GT) from the factory in Maranello, similar to half a dozen cars in the grid for the race. In Practice, the Rodríguez brothers got pole position in the top version of the Linas-Montlhery track, almost 8 kilometers long. Sunday October 21st, the brothers started in the lead and they kept their car there for almost all the race, except for the brief periods when they went into the pits to change driver and refill the fuel tank. Ricardo was particularly keen on defeating the British duo of John Surtees/Mike Parkes, for it was known that the former motorcycle world champion would be his teammate in Ferrari in 1963 and he wanted to show the world who was the top driver. In his final stint, Pedro left the seat to Ricardo with over two minutes in hand over their British rivals; Ricardo pushed hard to put them a lap down and he accomplished the feat a few laps from the end of the mandatory 129 laps, which meant the Mexican brothers were the only ones covering the full distance. It took them 6 hours, 21 minutes and 58.7 seconds to travel 1,004 kilometers, at an average speed of 157.727 kph. It would be their last victory together, for Ricardo would die in a crash practicing for the Mexican GP a few days later, on November 1st. |
